Using Mathematics as an Arsenal to Analyze the World

Grade 4-10

Teaching mathematics is a complex endeavor. This institute will provide a forum for teachers to engage in activities and discussions that aim to explore topics such as equity and inequity present in urban schools, creating opportunities for all students to learn mathematics in meaningful and relevant contexts, and recognizing mathematics as an essential analytical tool for understanding and changing the world.

Areas of Focus:

    Deepening mathematics content knowledge through a critical lens

    Examining and analyzing teacher practice

    Algebraic Thinking and Number Sense

    California High School Exit Exam strands

    Writing for multiple purposes in the mathematics classroom

    Developing a plan for professional growth

 

Dates: June 24 - June 27, 2008 and September 20, 2008
       
Tuesday – Friday: 8:30 AM – 4:00 PM
        John Burroughs Middle School

        600 S McCadden Pl, Los Angeles, CA

               Saturday Follow-up Session:
            Sept 20, 2008
            8:30 AM –12:30 PM

Credit:            3-quarter Education units (optional) offered through UCLA Extension for an additional fee payable at the start of the institute. UCLA Extension credit is post-graduate professional credit.
